Below is a brief description of the school and its history.
Our School
Downham Church of England School was built on the present site in Ramsden Heath in 1959, replacing three village schools. It is a one storey building with light and airy classrooms, administrative offices, and ICT Suite, Library Area and an all purpose hall (used for dining, P.E., assemblies, drama, dance and school concerts).
The school building has recently undergone a programme of development (2007-2008) which has provided us with four new permanent class bases, two of which are purpose built Foundation Stage settings.

The development has also included an enlargement to the hall, a new corridor to improve access around the inside of the building and an external Foundation Stage play area. The final phase, the establishment of a new School Office and Foyer was completed in the Summer Term 2008. The final phase of building work was completed in June 2009 with the refurbishment of the Key Stage 2 toilets and a new meeting room.
We also have a new fitted kitchen area in our Resource Room.
We have a sports field within the school boundary as well as a wildlife area and an adventure playground. Now that the building work has been completed we are focussing on developing our outdoor environment as a curriculum resource. During the year 2008/2009, our outdoor environment was further developed. We have added 3 shelters, a new trim trail and a staged area. The children have been involved in extensive planting around the school including planting a willow tunnel. We shall continue developing the outdoor area especially through our involvement with Creative Partnerships.
The aim of all Church of England Primary Schools is to provide the best possible education,
for each child, within the context of a caring Christian community. We aim to provide a stimulating and enriching curriculum that is inspiring to all learners. All children at Downham School are expected to participate fully in the Religious Education programme and Acts of Worship. Our school has close links with the churches of St. Margaret’s at Downham and St. John’s at Ramsden Heath as well as Schools Ministry Billericay. In all respects, the school functions as any other Local Authority Primary School.
