Well done to the Year 5 KWIK cricket team who took part in the festival last week thank you to Mrs Gee for accompanying and organising the team.
School Sports Partnership 'Boot Camp'
Well done to Jack Collis, Samuel Pease and Daisy Broderick-Gatrell who have been competing with other children in our area in a ‘Boot Camp’ designed for children who are talented at PE run by our school sports partnership. A special well done to Daisy Broderick-Gatrell who has been selected for the next round.
During half-term, Miss Boyd and Miss Proctor took part in The Smiles Foundation’s Educational Challenge to Romania
The Smiles Foundation works in and around Oradea, north-west Romania near the Hungarian border. They spent most of their time at the Tileagd Community School, a short mini-bus ride from Oradea. They had opportunities to observe and teach lessons (with the help of translators!) and also to visit the families of some of the children who attend the school.
While the school itself is very impressive, the homes from which the children come are anything but impressive. In the village of Tileagd, none of the homes have running water. Thanks to The Smiles Foundation there is now a central, communal tap in the village. The family which Miss Boyd and Miss Proctor visited consisted of a mum, dad and ten children living in two rooms. This was one of the better off families!
We hope to build upon the links established between our school and Tileagd Community School in the coming months and years.
Tileagd - Smiles Foundation
We are very pleased to announce that the chicks in Class JA have begun to hatch and we have 8 chicks! This has been an exciting event for children (and staff) across the school as we all admire how amazing they are. Nature really is a beautiful thing!

National Schools Sports Week (NSSW)
We’re delighted to be taking part in the UK’s biggest school sporting event again this year – Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, which runs from 27 June – 1 July 2011. This is a fun week of sport and celebration, which uses the inspiration of London 2012 to help our young people take part in more sport. As a Proud Partner of London 2012, Lloyds TSB is also giving us the chance to win 20 tickets to an event at the London 2012 Olympics or Paralympic Games. To have the best chance of winning, we need you to make a pledge of support (a vote) for our school online. It’s simple to do, just go to http://www.lloydstsblondon2012.co.uk/In-your-community/National-School-Sport-Week/, search for us by school name or postcode –CM11 1NU– fill in your details and click the ‘Submit’ button. Your pledge of support could make all the difference. It did last year as we won the £1000 sports vouchers! We just need 50 pledges of support to be in with a chance of winning tickets to London 2012. Even if we reach 25 pledges we’ll still be in with a chance of winning £500 of sports equipment vouchers.
Spring Term 2011
Royal Wedding
Last week was our ‘Royal Wedding’ week. Thank you to parents who have commented in home/ school diaries about the week. Children enjoyed activities linked to the wedding theme and especially enjoyed the tea party on Thursday afternoon! Our thanks to those parents who donated cakes or their time to help at the tea party. Well done to everyone for their fabulous fancy dress entries and to our winners. Two children from each class were put through into the grand final and these children were judged by Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Doyle and Mrs Josiah, our chair of governors, during the tea party. It was a very difficult decision to make. Thank you also to our judges.
Inter-Schools Maths Competition
Well done to James Cobley, Joseph Price, Rebecca Field and Elise Carvosso for representing Downham at the inter-schools maths competition that took place on Thursday 28th April. All children worked hard on the challenges they were given and were a credit to our school. Thank you to Miss Proctor for accompanying the children.
Easter Egg Competition
Congratulations to all who entered.
We had so many entries to the Easter Egg Competiton this year. We asked the children to decorate an egg. The standard was very high, and it was very hard to judge. Congratulations to the winning entries, they were announced at the Easter service and all entries received a small prize.

Comic Relief
A very Big Thank You
With your support we raised a fantastic £483.70 which includes the sale of red noses, and everyone came to school wearing red clothes. The school council ran a poster competition to promote Red Nose Day and the winners were announced in last week’s assembly. Well done to all our winners and to Lucy Stokes who was the overall winner. Thank you to Miss Proctor and our school council for organising the fundraising activities.
K’Nex Competition
Well done to Jack Mizen, Matthew McSweeney, Grant Clark and James Cobley for participating in the area final of the K’Nex Challenge after school on Tuesday. This is a national competition organised by Young Engineers. The children had to design and make a solution to a problem they were given on the evening. Both teams worked well together and created good designs. The children were presented with their certificates in assembly today 25th March. Thank you to Miss Edwards for arranging for our school to take part.
Writing Competition
Some of our children have entered the ‘Rotart Young Writers’ competition this term. We were commended on the high standard of all the entries. Every child who took part will receive a certificate which will be presented members of the Rotary Club in an assembly. We are delighted to announce that Downham pupils won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In first place was Charlotte Josiah; second place was won by Amelia Armiger; third place went to Jai Felstead. These three children will be presented with trophies in an assembly. Charlotte and Amelia’s entries will now be entered into the regional finals. Well done to all who took part.
Congratulations to our gymnastics team-Maddie, Jessica, Ella, Marney, Lucy and Evie who came 2nd in the Essex School Gymnastics Competition for the girls’ plate. There was less than one point between our team and the winning school. The competition was in two parts: vaulting and floor routine and was held after school on Monday at Sandon High School. Congratulations to Marney who also achieved first place for each of her individual performances, scoring 9.1 and 9.2. This is the first time that Downham have entered a team and to be awarded the second place trophy is a tremendous achievement. Our thanks to all their parents and grandparents for their support and encouragement with this activity.
One of our grandparents-Mrs Patey has kindly offered to help with the school gardening. She is looking for parents or grandparents who can spare a couple of hours on Monday mornings from 10am until 1pm to help her. If you are able to support us in this way, please leave your details at the school office with your Name, Telephone Number and E-mail Address. It will make a real difference to our school environment.
Thank you for joining Our wonderful VIP Afternoon,
